A Brief History
Samantha and Simon Spearing took over the Red Deer in November 2001, as their first pub (although Samantha had previously worked behind the bar here).
The Red Deer was awarded Sheffield CAMRA "Pub of the Month" in November 2006 and December 2002.
The Red Deer dates from 1825, although it has been much extended since.
It originally comprised three small rooms with a central bar area.
These rooms were opened out in the 1980's and the bar repositioned to give a
single L-shaped lounge.
A raised area towards the rear, "The Gallery", was added in 1993 and this leads on
to a beer garden.
Presently owned by Punch Taverns, The Red Deer was previously part of Tetley,
who acquired it, with the takeover of Duncan Gilmours, in 1954.
In 1993, Tetley asked the Sheffield branch of CAMRA to nominate the best Tetley pub in Sheffield
to receive an award to celebrate their anniversary and the Red Deer was chosen.
The award - a plaque-mounted hand-pump - is on display in the bar area.
